Meet The Team: Billy Hockley

Updated: Jul 16

Billy Hockley, Mortgage Adviser

This past week, we connected with the newest team member of the Cedar Crest team: Billy Hockley. Billy is one of our mortgage advisers who's responsible for providing mortgage advice and property finance solutions to UK residents and expats around the world.

An avid sports fan and athlete, Billy gets personal with us in our latest interview and shares more on his personal interests, his professional background and what it's like to work at Cedar Crest.

Welcome onboard Billy Hockley!

What led you to choose to be a mortgage adviser?

Billy Hockley:

I started out in a B2B role doing corporate lending for one of the big banks in the UK. I then quickly realised that I wanted to be in a B2C type of role where I could work directly with people and retail clients as opposed to companies. There also seemed to be a glass ceiling with banks which set limits on career progression. I prefer working with different types of people and helping clients with their financial needs.

Given my interests in the retail side of financial services, I ended up working in Dubai at Guardian Wealth Management (currently Skybound Wealth Management), a global independent financial advisory firm where I met Hamzah Shalchi and Elliott Parkhouse (co-founders of Cedar Crest). After a few years of living in the Middle East, I decided to move back to the UK, where it made complete sense to focus on mortgages and property financing given that the UK property market is so strong.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Billy Hockley:

I like how dynamic my job is and the fact that I get to work with a diverse set of clients from different parts of the world. On a regular basis, I get to use my experience by engaging and educating clients on a daily basis. It is also quite interesting to not know who or what you are going to be dealing with next. Normally every day is a school day!

Best advice anyone has given you?

Billy Hockley:

I have been given different types of advice over the years from different people whom I have worked with. My colleagues, whether it be people that I worked alongside with and people within the company that I never worked with at all have taught me so much.

The one piece of advice that has always stuck with me is not being afraid of failure. We learn from failure. It makes us more resilient and shapes our character.

About yourself...

Billy Hockley:

I am quite active and absolutely love sports. I run, swim and ride a road bike, whether it be individually or with others and I always enjoy the occasional race! I love an active holiday, such as a ski trip, and I am not a big fan of lounging around in the sun all day!

I am also a father of a two year old daughter who teaches me something everyday. On my spare time, you will always see my preparing for industry exams.

About your role...

Billy Hockley:

If there's one word to describe my role is multi-faceted. Which is great! Although I am mainly currently dealing with clients from the Middle East who are looking for UK mortgages, I will soon be dealing with the UK resident market.

I also have my existing wealth management clients whom I still work with and provide financial advice for.

If you weren’t doing this job, what would you be doing?

Billy Hockley:

Given my love for sports, my answer will not surprise you. I would be living and training in somewhere like Majorca, Girona or the Alps and racing all over the world as a professional cyclist or triathlete.

Why did you chose to work for Cedar Crest?

Billy Hockley:

Having known Hamzah, Elliott and Simon (co-founders of Cedar Crest) for years, working for and under them, I am confident that their commitment, motivation and collective drive to succeed, will put the business in good stead and as such be a rewarding place to work.

What are your future aspirations?

Be in a position to do what I want, when I want, wherever I want.

What are your hobbies outside of work?

Billy Hockley:

Training, spending time with my daughter, eating out and racing on the weekends.

Best financial tips you have gotten?

Billy Hockley:

Get the basics right first. Save a sensible amount each month, don’t live beyond your means, budget well, and always overcompensate slightly.
